Fusarium Wilt

Fusarium oxysporum

A soilborne vascular wilt disease affecting a wide range of tree species. The fungus colonizes the root system and moves into the vascular tissue, causing progressive wilting and eventual tree death.

Peak Season: Most active during warm, moist conditions. Germination increases with higher temperatures and adequate moisture.
Fusarium wilt showing characteristic wilting and vascular discoloration

Identification & Symptoms

What to Look For

Wilting or yellowing of some leaves on scattered top branches
Leaves hanging down before eventually dying and dropping
Red to brown ring of discolored sapwood in trunk and branches
Xylem plugged with brown gum
One-sided wilting in small branches
Bark flattened over collapsing tissue
Slight inward turning of branches (shepherd's crook)
Progressive tree decline over 18 months

Potential Damage

Vascular system colonization and blockage
Progressive wilting and branch mortality
Disruption of water and nutrient transport
Tree death typically within 18 months
Soil contamination with persistent spores
Economic losses in landscaping and forestry

Lifecycle

Completely soilborne fungus that survives unfavorable conditions as thick-walled chlamydospores. Infection occurs through hyphal growth or germination of microconidia and macroconidia. Germination triggered by proper host presence, adequate moisture, and higher temperatures.

Professional Treatment Approach

1

Apply Fungisol as preventive soil treatment

2

Avoid root wounding from construction and transplanting

3

Address underlying stress factors (drought, flooding, compaction)

4

Maintain proper soil pH and nutrition

5

Control nematodes and soil insects that create wounds

6

Improve tree health with Arborfos to enhance resistance
